How to Spread Bet on Costco Wholesale

How to Spread Bet on Costco Wholesale?

If an investor is looking to invest in US listed companies like Costco Wholesale then one option could be to place a spread bet on the Costco Wholesale share price.

Looking at a spread trading platform like Capitalspreads, we can see that they are currently offering the Costco Wholesale Rolling Daily market at $102.49 - $102.65. This means an investor could spread bet on the Costco Wholesale share price:

  Costco Wholesale Spread Betting Example Going above $102.65, or
  Costco Wholesale Trading Example Going below $102.49

Whilst financial spread trading on S&P 500 equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, should you decide to invest £3 per cent and the Costco Wholesale shares move $0.39 then that would make a difference to your P&L of £117. £3 per cent x $0.39 = £117.

You can also spread bet on this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

You should note that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market', therefore unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will simply roll over to the next session.

If your position is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:

  Costco Wholesale Trading Example Increase - then you usually pay a small overnight financing fee, or
  Costco Wholesale Trading Example Decrease - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account

To learn more about Rolling Daily Markets please see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

So, if you consider the above spread of $102.49 - $102.65 and make the assumptions that:
  • You've done your research, and
  • You think that the Costco Wholesale shares will increase and move higher than $102.65
Then you may buy a spread bet at $102.65 for a stake of £2 per cent.

So, you win £2 for every cent that the Costco Wholesale shares move above $102.65. Conversely, however, it also means that you will lose £2 for every cent that the Costco Wholesale market moves below $102.65.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

As a result, if after a few sessions the shares moved higher then you could consider closing your spread bet so that you can guarantee your profit. As an example, should the market rise, the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to $103.44 - $103.60. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at $103.44. Therefore, with the same £2 stake you would make:

Profit = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = ($103.44 - $102.65) x £2 per cent stake
Profit = $0.79 x £2 per cent stake
Profit = 79¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit = £158 profit

Speculating on equities, whether by spread betting or not, can work against you. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would rise. However, it can also fall.

If the Costco Wholesale stock had fallen then you might choose to close your spread bet to limit your losses.

If the spread dropped to $101.79 - $101.95 you would close your trade by selling at $101.79. As a result, your loss would be:

Loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = ($101.79 - $102.65) x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -$0.86 x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -86¢ x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -£172 loss

Note - Costco Wholesale Rolling Daily equities market correct as of 06-Feb-13.
