Commodities Spread Betting, 6 May 2011
There is little that can explain the recent declines in indices so far this week apart from an aggressive sell off in risk assets across the commodities spread betting markets.
The increase in silver margin requirements by the CME exchange has had a knock effect across other metals and commodities as many traders either hit the big red sell button or have shorted the market to cover themselves.
Gold suffered big losses that took the precious metal back below $1500 but the story of the day has once again been silver which recorded another double digit percentage decline. Selling was rife across all commodities and Brent crude too saw unprecedented weakness.
This morning the commodity markets are mixed with Brent continuing to head lower but gold is a bit higher. Silver is just lower so far after suffering its biggest one day loss since 1980. This indicates that silver is stuffed full of more speculative cash than gold so for many gold is seen as the safer option.

So what has happened to the silver spread betting market? Around ten days ago it was trading near its all time high at $49.81 but has now slumped to $38.55 this morning.
A Chicago based broker thinks the price may drop as low at 31 Dollars by the end of the week, after its biggest three day fall since 1983.
The extensive fall is due to the Comex in New York raising the minimum amount of funds that can be deposited by investors when borrowing from brokers to trade silver.
Meanwhile, gold was trading at $1,543 yesterday but fell as low as $1,505 at around 5pm UK time.
The fall in gold came in line with the weakening of crude oil, which fell on reports that showed a slower than expected rate of expansion in US services industries and employment. Which in turn means recovery isn’t happening as quickly as everybody expected.
Another reason for the large sell off may be down to the announcement that George Soros sold off some long gold positions in his fund.
Commodities Spread Betting, 4 May 2011
Gold went sideways as investors couldn’t make up their mind as to whether the equity markets were set to sell off or carry on higher. This morning the precious metal is at $1537 and key levels are $1552/58 and $1567 to the upside with $1525/18 and then $1505/00 to the downside.
The crude oil spread betting markets took a tumble late on with Brent falling from $124 down to $122 where it sits just above this morning. $121 and then $119.75 are important near term support levels with $123.20, $124 and $125.35 seen as resistance.

One thing that has really picked up over the last couple of days is volatility and, in particular, volatility on the commodity spread betting markets.
The gold spread betting market saw an extraordinary move late yesterday where it traded almost $30 lower in under a minute, a move that could have caught a lot of bulls off guard.
The price dipped from around $1545 to $1516 before reversing the decline in a matter of seconds and this morning we're back above $1540 at $1542.
This increase in volatility reminds us of how dangerous it can be to trade these riskier assets, even though gold is considered a safe haven traditionally, it is full of speculative bulls and yesterday's move is just a taste of what could happen, especially when the bubble eventually bursts.
Oil is a tad lower and it too had its fair share of volatile moves yesterday. Brent is at $124.60 this morning having traded sideways so far this session, but it should see activity pick up later in the day as the US wakes up and joins the fun.

Commodities Spread Betting, 28 Apr 2011
As expected, the weakened Dollar ensured a push higher for the unstoppable forces of gold and silver.
Spot gold hit $1,533 an ounce and silver advanced to $48.13 and, as long as the interest rate and inflation theme remains, it has become extremely difficult to see a turn in investor interest.
Analysts at Credit Suisse see the yellow metal reaching $1,650 in the next year. Anyone out there think it will do it quicker than that?

Commodities Spread Betting, 27 Apr 2011
After the massive hikes in both gold and silver a couple of days back, we saw silver retracing which had a knock-on effect on the gold spread trading market. The metal fell as much as 17 Dollars to $1,492, which seems unheard of now.
Again, the FOMC release is likely to have some sort on effect on the metals, but a weaker Dollar until then may have cause for the metals to trade higher in the meantime.
It is worth noting that the Relative Strength Index for gold has traded at 70 for eight days, which is a potential sign for a pullback, so traders should beware.

Commodities Spread Betting, 26 Apr 2011
Although the Dollar is down this morning, the major commodities spread betting markets are too. Then again, gold smashed its record yesterday, trading over $1,518, so traders could be still possibly be taking profits here.
Inflation is, of course, still a major theme here so any pullbacks may just be seen as short term breathing space. Shorters beware.
The other star commodity that is still making headlines is silver, nearly reaching that 1980 record high of $50. It fell marginally short at $49.84, but we wonder how long it will take to break that record. After all, its only risen 270% in the past 12 months alone.
