Yesterday was a risk off day as equities and commodities fell with investors seeking the safe haven of either cash or stable government bonds.
In an unusual move the commodity spread betting markets suffered severe weakness just as indices did and it was quite a surprise to see crude come off as much as it did considering the slightly more “hawkish” stance towards Libya.
Gold suffered a severe bout of profit taking yesterday, almost reaching $1400, but is bouncing this morning back to $1416. Our spread betting account holders remain long of the precious metal, having ridden the recent retracement, with a few even adding to long positions.
Commodities Spreads, 10 Mar 2011
Gold drifted sideways throughout the day and has yet to have another look at $1440. The precious metal is at $1427 at the time of writing. Upside and downside levels are seen at $1437/41 and $1425/17 respectively.
OPEC's reluctance to call an emergency meeting and reassurance that they'd meet any shortfall in supply brought crude oil spreads back a little. However, the declines were short lived as bulls returned to the market to push Brent back above $115.
The Libya issue also continues to underpin both oil and gold. This morning Brent is at $116.10 so key levels to watch in the near term are $113.40 and $118.10 to the upside.

Gold thought about having another look at $1440 again but swiftly retraced. This morning the precious metal is at $1430.

Inflation has been another of the themes of 2011 and as oil prices remain high the pressure will filter through to the front line. Consumers, who are already being will be hit by higher prices for fuel, clothing and other energy bills, will see their disposable income diminish even further.
My wife was even moaning at the week end that £50 only got to just over half the tank. I suppose that meant less for her to fritter away in the shops, wonderful, a bit of deflation.
The rise in prices was confined to the soft commodities earlier in the year, but now with the focus on oil, this affects so many of us like another tax burden.
The threat to global growth is real and any further increase in the oil spread betting market, say another ten, twenty or thirty Dollars could knock at least one if not two percentage points off global GDP.
A coordinated approach by OPEC to raise output has brought the bears out in the oil markets with crude prices falling some two Dollars.
Gold also suffered from the return to the Dollar yesterday and swiftly rejected its highs after hitting another record above $1440.
The near term upward trend line should provide some help bulls around $1422/25 and below here $1417 and $1411 are seen as support. Resistance should come in at $1436 and of course the recent highs at $1445.

Markets emerge from the weekend without any improvement to the Libyan crisis and in fact an escalation of the tensions as the situation looks more likely to turn into a full blown civil war.
So we’re faced with a familiar start to the week which involves higher oil spreads and lower equities as the slightly negative end to trading last Friday is set to continue into today.
On top of this the ECB President put his cards on the table and basically guaranteed a rate rise for the Eurozone within the next couple of months. That’s going to be a bitter pill to swallow for the likes of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.
The combination of two very different crises is hampering the market’s ability to head higher with the real focus being on the price of Brent crude. Brent is currently not far off the high it spiked to towards the end of February and Nymex continues to catch up on all its lost ground, hitting a new two and a half year high this morning.
The gold spread trading market has seen a swift return to its highs and had a very positive session in Asian overnight. After dipping back to $1410 the bulls were quick to jump back into the precious metal and so we’re back at the highs again around $1437.
$1439 and $1448 are resistance meanwhile support is seen around $1420, the upward trend line and then $1412.

As investors piled back into equities they tumbled out of gold which saw a reasonable retracement of over a percentage point back to the mid $1410s.
This morning the precious metal is at $1415 so to this little bit of downside pressure means the focus has shifted to support areas seen around $1407 and then the $1400/1395 area. To the upside the goal for the bulls is $1439.
Crude dropped almost 2% in the session which was also the main reason for the strength in equities yesterday. This morning Brent crude oil is a buck in the black at 115.80 so near term support is seen at 113.10 and resistance around 118.00.

The FTSE clawed back much of its losses from earlier in the day to almost close higher in the end.
However, the moment it had closed the FTSE futures went back into reverse and gave up some 40 points in less than half an hour as oil ramped higher after the European close.
After a mixed session in the US this morning is a slightly different story as the FTSE is actually seeing some early strength again as the oil spread trading market is dipping, but the question is whether this can last.
Once again the Dollar was the whipping boy in yesterday's session as traders shunned the US currency in favour of things like gold and oil.
Can you believe it, the gold spread betting market hit a record high yesterday. Interestingly the profit taking we're seeing in the underlying market this morning is not rubbing off on our spread betting account holders.
In fact they have been long of the precious metal since I care to remember, but this time they have not been very active in selling out of long positions, which is usually the case after a strong move higher or a new high.
Both gold and silver, and oil for that matter, are stuffed full of speculative long positions, so for the meantime they look to be well supported. Gold has dipped back below $1430 to $1427 at the time of writing so support is not seen until the $1412 to $1407 area.

Yesterday's speech by Ben Bernanke didn't have as much of an effect on the markets as traders were focusing on the price of oil as opposed to the dovish remarks he made about having little concern for the recent spike. Unfortunately, the market has different views and yesterday saw a late jump in the crude oil spread betting market.
Gold traded to a new nominal all time high last night and continues to gain momentum as things in the Middle East continue to look messy, but this morning there's a little profit taking as we're down a few bucks at $1429.

The crude oil spread betting markets continue to move sideways, as they have done for the last two sessions, but there has not been a mass shake out of the bulls as yet.
There’s still a great deal of “froth” in the oil price, with a lot of speculative long positions, which is a recipe for the price to move aggressively in either direction depending on what triggers it.
Gold oscillated around $1410 as it looked like traders awaited some sort of news out from Libya or beyond. This morning the precious metal is at $1414.

The gold spread betting market jumped back above $1410 over the weekend and is hovering around there this morning. The bulls seem to be waiting for the next bad bit of news before attempting to push beyond the record highs so things seem evenly balanced this morning.
