Commodities Spread Betting, 2 Jul 2010
Aside from bonds all asset classes were under pressure, with even Gold failing to benefit from any ‘safe haven’ boost. As feared in previous comments Gold is joining the rout as the reasons for buying the Yellow Metal in times of stress seem to have finally run out of steam.
But Gold has had these 60 Dollar falls, and even more, many times over the last few years only for the buyers to return to drive us to new highs. We did bounce off the $1195 support which held at the start of June but bears may be targeting $1170 trend support and possibly even lower towards the $1040/50 major price support level.
Bulls will naturally be looking for a quick return to levels above $1216 and $1224 to give confidence that the bull momentum is still in place.
Oil naturally fell as well as the 75 Dollar level was breached and fears for growth meant fears for consumption. We actually spent most of yesterday’s session between $72.00 and $73.00 after the Europeans sold off in the early afternoon.
This morning we are in an even tighter range between $72.75 and $73.25 with no real effort in either direction. Bulls will be worrying that there has been no bounce and bears that there seems to be good support below $72.75 to $72.00. As with all the other markets the key will probably be the NFP later today.

Gold remains near to its all time highs, $1264, at $1240 but the woes of the equity markets do not seem to be, as yet, triggering another surge in the yellow metal.
We seem to be trading around a mid point band of $1238.5-1240.0; either we are in a small range just above this or just below it and then remain in that range for hours at a time.
Attempts higher are swiftly defeated but the same can be said for moves down as well. A bit trite but we are probably looking for a break of $1246 or $1234 to give us a bit of excitement.
Oil has finally started to show some reaction to the perceived possibility of another slowdown.
Slower growth with increased production means lower prices. But we will really need some real economic data to send us significantly under the 75 Dollar level which was finally breached earlier this morning.
This is the one market where we might expect price action fireworks in the near term as a recovery in equity market sentiment might send us swiftly back to the $80 level. Continued pessimism on the other hand may put heavy pressure on longs and force us back to the $68.50/69.00 support.

Gold tried for a move lower in the midst of all the chaos yesterday but the never ending stream of buyers kept its head above water by the close.
The price action for Gold was slightly strange in that we have become used to the market reacting positively to dire situations elsewhere, and a 3% drop in the S&P must surely be considered grim.
This, and the action in Oil, does at least give some hope for the bulls that the current weakness is merely a necessary blow out of weak players before markets can move higher again. There is always an argument for a bull move even in the most convincing of bear markets.
Oil has managed to hold above the really big support of $75.00/75.50 and it must be said “with some ease”. We had a series of attacks all throughout yesterday’s afternoon and evening sessions on $75.20, the low of both Wednesday and Thursday last week, all to no effect.
We know that producers want to hold prices above $75 and traders are unwilling at the moment to challenge this. A double-dip recession though would blow the desires of OPEC etc out of the water and so the inability of the market to break down might be taken as a signal that demand from users is stable.

Gold was the biggest surprise yesterday after a spike higher on the US session open, almost to the all time highs, appeared to trigger a huge market sell order.
The consequence was a drop of over 20 Dollars in just over an hour in two separate waves of selling. An event from which we are still struggling to recover.
The price is currently at $1234.5 and is possibly in danger of slipping below the mid term bull trend line at around $1234.
Crude oil has again rejected 79/80 Dollars and is now threatening a stronger move lower. As mentioned previously, the headline price is slightly miss-informational as each forward month is about $1/$1.50 higher than the previous contract.
The last two expiries alone have totalled over $4 of premium leaving the ‘real’ price actually below $70 on YE09 valuations. This is a hidden cost to end users and explains, to a certain extent, why oil prices on the forecourt continue to rise.
There is support at $76.50 and into the $75 area, where OPEC wish to hold levels, below here though dealers may be fearful of a quick return to the $68/69 levels which have proved resilient over the past nine months.

The price of Gold continues to creep up, overall if not on the open this morning, as investors continue to worry about global markets and possible further fiscal stimuli.
The Yellow Metal is becoming a sort of ‘Canary in the coal mine’ continually cheeping just before another explosion. We have frequently mentioned the poor money supply numbers as a worry for future growth and with G20 now out of the way yet another anti-stimulus measure has been enacted.
Oil has spiked higher again in the face of the upcoming Tropical storm season. However, it must be warned that after the storm problems of 2007 it is unlikely that any current production platforms will be affected by whatever Mother Nature can throw at them, barring a once in a lifetime event.
Over the last few years ‘storm price spikes’ have been selling opportunities.

Gold’s failure to sustain the highs has brought it back down to the $1245 area and it looks to be well supported by the 20 day moving average. Our spread betting clients remain long and continue to reap the rewards of this raging bull market.
Crude oil has had a little correction to the downside along with equities this week, but bounced off $75 yesterday so it too seems well supported.
At $76.50 this morning technical analysts will be interested to see that the 20 and 50 day moving averages are crossing as I write, which often indicates the next bull phase is under way.

Gold broke the $1234 support mentioned yesterday and immediately slumped to $1224 in just a few minutes, presumably as sell orders were triggered in the futures markets.
As always though buy orders then came back into the market to take us back up. The rising trend line that failed yesterday is now at $1238 and interestingly this morning this has proved to be the high point.
The price is now at $1231 and looking fragile but bears should be cautious as the attraction of the Yellow Metal has proved very difficult to budge.
Press speculation is still almost universally Gold positive and in such a retail investor focused market this is still proving to be decisive.
Oil is also under pressure, drifting 2 Dollars yesterday and finding no real bounce yet today. There is very good support all the way through the $75 region, as would be expected due to this being the OPEC desired target.
This said the continued failure to make much headway, and the fact that every month is at least a Dollar more expensive that the previous contract, is providing Oil based inflation even though the ‘headline’ price is not actually rising.
Over the last year buyers have paid the equivalent of 15% inflation on the price even though we are still at the same level as last August.

Gold is consolidating around $1240 and traders still seem very happy to remain long. The pull back of Monday appears to have been contained and buyers are coming back in looking to take advantage of the marginally lower prices.
The support mentioned yesterday, at $1233, held very well through the session and our spread betting account holders were continual buyers every time we dipped under $1235.
There is minor resistance at $1242/45 which may bring out some profit taking but short term longs will probably remain in place as long as we remain above the recent bullish trendline, now at $1234.
Oil is reflecting the other markets and has fallen from the $79/80 level back to $77.50 this morning.
At current prices the commodity relies on supply issues to drive higher and the world’s producers, excluding Iran, seem to be slightly more stable these days.
It is unlikely that current world growth rates will cause shortages so bulls will be hoping for political friction for progress from these prices.

Gold was the big mover yesterday which was not really surprising as hopes for another reserve currency rather removes one of the major arguments for buying the yellow metal.
The price dropped from $1264 all the way to $1230.5 before buyers came back into the frame, from the exact price of the rising short term trend line in place since May.
It is reported that hedge funds are still heavily long of the contract but this can be something of a double edged sword. While it would not be wise to bet against them it would be equally foolish not to acknowledge the fact that they will eventually liquidate their positions. Strong support is at $1233 rising from $1230.5 yesterday resistance is at $1240 and $1248/52
Oil has also run into something of a wall above $78/79 bucks for the August Nymex contract.
Sentiment is Crude bullish just at the moment but traders are similarly nervous of buying above these levels, as they seem to be in so many asset classes at the moment. Support is at $77.70 and $76.00 whilst resistance is at $78.60/75 and $79.45 and $80.00

The markets are dominated by the Chinese announcement that they will permit more flexibility in their currency.
The Dollar has fallen in reaction as its status as the worlds leading currency of choice comes under question.
As with most recent market moves a weakening Dollar has also translated into rising Equity, Oil and Gold prices.
Gold continues to forge ahead and defied any calls for a double top around the $1250 area. Now at $1264 this morning the precious metal has entered the next stage in its relentless move higher.
Crude oil prices are also firmer as we head back to the $80 region, almost touching it this morning. Now firmly back above the 50 day moving average, crude bulls are back in control of proceedings and they’ll have their eyes on the highs around $86.
