How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Cognizant Technology Rolling Daily
If you want to speculate on firms such as Cognizant Technology then one possibility could be spread betting on the Cognizant Technology share price.
If an investor was to look at the paddypowertrader spread betting website, they are currently pricing the Cognizant Technology Rolling Daily market at $74.95 - $74.96. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Cognizant Technology share price:
- Going above $74.96, or
- Going below $74.95
When making a spread bet on US equities you trade in £x per cent. As a result, should you choose to risk £4 per cent and the Cognizant Technology share price moves $0.05 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £20. £4 per cent x $0.05 = £20.

- Go down - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

Cognizant Technology Rolling Daily - US Equities Spread Trading Example
Now, if we consider the spread of $74.95 - $74.96 and assume:
- you have done your research, and
- it leads you to think that the Cognizant Technology share price is likely to go above $74.96
then you could decide to buy a spread bet at $74.96 and invest, let’s say, £2 per cent.
This means that you win £2 for every cent that the Cognizant Technology shares increase and move higher than $74.96. Nevertheless, it also means that you will lose £2 for every cent that the Cognizant Technology market moves below $74.96.
Looking at this from another angle, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profits are worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few sessions the shares rose then you might want to close your trade in order to lock in your profit.
Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread, determined by the spread betting firm, could change to $75.48 - $75.49. You would settle/close your trade by selling at $75.48. As a result, with the same £2 stake you would make a profit of:
Profits (or losses) = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = ($75.48 - $74.96) x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = $0.52 x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = 52¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = £104 profit
Trading shares, by spread betting or otherwise, doesn't always work out as you would have liked. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Nevertheless, the share price could fall.
If the Cognizant Technology share price had fallen then you might decide to close/settle your position to stop any further losses.
So if the spread fell to $74.36 - $74.37 then you would settle your position by selling at $74.36. This would result in a loss of:
Profits (or losses) = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = ($74.36 - $74.96) x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -$0.60 x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -60¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -£120 loss
