How to Spread Bet on Chemring

How to Spread Bet on Chemring?

Should an investor want to speculate on UK companies such as Chemring then one possibility is to spread bet on the Chemring share price.

Logging into InterTrader, we can see that they have priced the Chemring Rolling Daily market at 314.5p - 315.7p. Therefore, you could spread bet on the Chemring shares:

Chemring Spread Betting Example Rising above 315.7p, or
Chemring Spread Trading Example Falling below 314.5p

When making a spread bet on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, if you invest £4 per penny and the Chemring shares move 24p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £96. £4 per penny x 24p = £96.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next trading day.

Should your bet roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:

Chemring Spread Trading Example Go up - then you will normally be charged a small financing fee, or
Chemring Spread Trading Example Go down - then you'll often receive a small payment to your account

To find out more about Rolling Daily Markets read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Chemring Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Trading Example

If you consider the above spread of 314.5p - 315.7p and make the assumptions that:
  • You've done your stock market research, and
  • Your research suggests that the Chemring shares will increase and go above 315.7p
Then you could decide that you are going to buy at 315.7p and risk, for the sake of argument, £10 per penny.

So, you win £10 for every penny that the Chemring shares push higher than 315.7p. Conversely, however, it also means that you will lose £10 for every penny that the Chemring market falls below 315.7p.

Put another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

As a result, if after a few sessions the shares started to move upwards then you could choose to close your position so that you can lock in your profit. If that happened then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to 328.3p - 329.5p. You would settle/close your trade by selling at 328.3p. Accordingly, with the same £10 stake your profit would be calculated as:

P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (328.3p - 315.7p) x £10 per penny stake
P&L = 12.6p x £10 per penny stake
P&L = £126.00 profit

Financial spread betting is not easy. With this example, you wanted the share price to rise. However, the share price can also fall.

If the Chemring stock weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your position to stop any further losses.

If the market dropped to 301.5p - 302.7p then you would sell back your position at 301.5p. If so, this would result in a loss of:

P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (301.5p - 315.7p) x £10 per penny stake
P&L = -14.2p x £10 per penny stake
P&L = -£142.00 loss

Note - Chemring Rolling Daily spread betting market quoted as of 31-Oct-12.
