How to Spread Bet on Forex - Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc Rolling Daily
As with many markets, you can spread bet on foreign exchange pairs, like Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc, to either rise or fall.
If an investor was to look at the Tradefair spread betting site, they are currently giving the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc Rolling Daily market at SFr 0.86580 - SFr 0.86640. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc FX rate:
- Moving higher than SFr 0.86640, or
- Moving lower than SFr 0.86580
When spread trading on Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc you trade in £x per point where a point is SFr 0.00010 of the pairs movement. Therefore, if you decided to invest £6 per point and Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc moves SFr 0.00050 then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £30. £6 per point x SFr 0.00050 = £6 per point x 5.0 points = £30.
Rolling Daily FX Markets
This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it just rolls over to the next trading session.
If you allow your trade to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:
- Move higher - then you will usually be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move lower - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc Rolling Daily Spread Betting Example
If we think about the spread of SFr 0.86580 - SFr 0.86640 and assume:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- you think that the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc rate will go above SFr 0.86640
then you could decide that you want to buy a spread bet at SFr 0.86640 and invest, for example, £3 per point.
So, you gain £3 for every point (SFr 0.00010) that the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc forex rate pushes higher than SFr 0.86640. However, it also means that you will make a loss of £3 for every point that the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc market moves below SFr 0.86640.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
Therefore, if after a few hours the rate started to increase then you might think about closing your spread bet so that you can lock in your profit.
So if the market rose then the spread might change to SFr 0.87073 - SFr 0.87133. To close your trade you would sell at SFr 0.87073. Therefore, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:
P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (SFr 0.87073 - SFr 0.86640) x £3 per point stake
P&L = SFr 0.00433 x £3 per point stake
P&L = 43.3 points x £3 per point stake
P&L = £129.90 profit
Speculating on forex, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not always easy. With the above, you wanted the FX pair to increase. Of course, it can also fall.
If the Canadian Dollar - Swiss Franc market decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you could choose to close your position to stop any further losses.
So if the spread fell to SFr 0.86163 - SFr 0.86223 then this means you would close your trade by selling at SFr 0.86163. If so, your loss would be calculated as:
P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (SFr 0.86163 - SFr 0.86640) x £3 per point stake
P&L = SFr 0.00477 x £3 per point stake
P&L = -47.7 points x £3 per point stake
P&L = -£143.10 loss
