How to Spread Bet on Caledonia Investments

How to Spread Bet on Caledonia Investments?

If an investor wants to speculate on UK companies such as Caledonia Investments then one solution could be spread betting on the Caledonia Investments share price.

Looking at a spread trading platform like Tradefair, we can see they have put the Caledonia Investments Rolling Daily market at 1528.0p - 1537.0p. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Caledonia Investments share price:

  Caledonia Investments Spread Trading Example Increasing higher than 1537.0p, or
  Caledonia Investments Trading Example Decreasing lower than 1528.0p

When financial spread betting on FTSE 350 shares you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, if you choose to risk £2 per penny and the Caledonia Investments share price changes by 20p then that would alter your profits (or losses) by £40. £2 per penny x 20p = £40.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no closing date for this market. You do not have to close your position, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it will stay open and roll over into the next day.

If your position is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:

  Caledonia Investments Trading Example Rise - then you'll normally be charged a small financing fee, or
  Caledonia Investments Trading Example Fall - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

Caledonia Investments Rolling Daily - Shares Trading Example

If we continue with the above spread of 1528.0p - 1537.0p and make the assumptions:
  • You have completed your analysis of the company, and
  • Your research suggests the Caledonia Investments share price will increase and go above 1537.0p
Then you may buy a spread bet at 1537.0p for a stake of £3 per penny.

This means that you make a profit of £3 for every penny that the Caledonia Investments shares rise higher than 1537.0p. Of course, you will make a loss of £3 for every penny that the Caledonia Investments market falls lower than 1537.0p.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

As a result, if after a few days the stock moved higher then you might want to close your spread bet in order to guarantee your profit. As an example, should the market rise, the spread, determined by the spread betting company, might change to 1580.8p - 1589.8p. You would settle/close your trade by selling at 1580.8p. So, with the same £3 stake your profit would be:

Profit = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit = (1580.8p - 1537.0p) x £3 per penny stake
Profit = 43.8p x £3 per penny stake
Profit = £131.40 profit

Speculating on shares, whether by spread trading or otherwise, can fail to go to plan. With this example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Nevertheless, the share price can also fall.

If the Caledonia Investments share price had started to drop then you could close your position in order to restrict your losses.

So if the spread pulled back to 1498.6p - 1507.6p you would settle/close your trade by selling at 1498.6p. That would mean you would make a loss of:

Loss = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Loss = (1498.6p - 1537.0p) x £3 per penny stake
Loss = -38.4p x £3 per penny stake
Loss = -£115.20 loss

Note: Caledonia Investments Rolling Daily spread betting price correct as of 31-Oct-12.
