How to Spread Bet on Irish Shares - C&C Group Rolling Daily
Should an investor want to speculate on European companies such as C&C Group then one solution is to spread trade on the C&C Group share price.
If you were to look at the FinancialSpreads spread trading site, they are showing the C&C Group Rolling Daily market at €3.22 - €3.26. Therefore, you can spread trade on the C&C Group share price:
- Moving higher than €3.26, or
- Moving lower than €3.22
When spread betting on Irish shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you choose to invest £20 per cent and the C&C Group share price changes by €0.05 then that would make a difference to your P&L of £100. £20 per cent x €0.05 = £100.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
You should note that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market', therefore it does not have a set closing date. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will stay open and roll over into the next trading session.
If you do let your bet roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
- Rise - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Fall - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

C&C Group Rolling Daily - Irish Equities Trading Example
Now, if you consider the above spread of €3.22 - €3.26 and make the assumptions that:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- it leads you to feel that the C&C Group share price looks like it will increase and move above €3.26
then you may buy at €3.26 and risk, for the sake of argument, £10 per cent.
So, you gain £10 for every cent that the C&C Group shares rise higher than €3.26. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will lose £10 for every cent that the C&C Group market decreases lower than €3.26.
Looking at this from another angle, if you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few days the shares rose then you might want to close your position and therefore guarantee your profits.
So if the market rose then the spread could change to €3.42 - €3.46. You would settle/close your trade by selling at €3.42. So, with the same £10 stake this trade would result in a profit of:
Profits (or losses) = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€3.42 - €3.26) x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = €0.16 x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = 16c x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = £160 profit
Speculating on shares is not straightforward. With this example, you wanted the share price to rise. However, it can also go down.
If the C&C Group stock weakened, against your expectations, then you might decide to settle/close your position in order to limit your losses.
Should the spread fall back to €3.12 - €3.16 then this means you would settle your spread bet by selling at €3.12. This would result in a loss of:
Profits (or losses) = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€3.12 - €3.26) x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -€0.14 x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -14c x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -£140 loss
