How to Spread Bet on British Energy Shares?
At the time of writing the British Energy (June) spread is 564.5p - 566.9p with Financial Spreads. This ‘June’ market expires on 17-Jun-08.
Like many financial markets, you can spread trade on the future price of shares, like British Energy shares, increasing or decreasing.
Therefore you can online spread bet on British Energy shares settling:
- Higher than 566.9p, or
- Lower than 564.5p
On the expiry date for this market, 17-Jun-08.
When spread betting on UK equities, you trade in £x per penny, where a penny in this case, is 1p of British Energy share price movement.
As an example, if your stake was £16 per penny and the British Energy shares move 4p then that would be a £64 difference to your profit/loss.
Spread Trading Example - British Energy
For example, let's say, taking the above spread of 564.5p - 566.9p that you have done your analysis of the market and you think that the British Energy shares should finish above 566.9p on 17-Jun-08.
Therefore you buy at 566.9p for a stake of, let's say, £8 per penny.
When 'Buying' a spread trade your profit and loss is found by taking the difference between the final value of the market and the value you bought the market at, 566.9p and then multiplying that by the stake per penny of share price movement.
And so let's say that on the expiry date, 17-Jun-08, the market closes at 585p. If that happens then:
Profit = (585.0p - 566.9p) x £8 per penny stake.
Profit = 18.1p x £8 per penny stake.
= £144.80 profit.
What happened to the plan?
Of course, trading doesn't always go to plan. Had British Energy shares decreased in value and the market closed at a lower than expected price of 550p, you would have lost on this market.
Loss = (550.0p - 566.9p) x £8 per penny stake.
Loss = -16.9p x £8 per penny stake.
= -£135.20 loss.
