How to Spread Bet on German Shares - Beiersdorf Rolling Daily
If you are going to invest in European listed companies such as Beiersdorf then one possibility could be spread betting on the Beiersdorf share price.
If you were to look at the Tradefair website, they are currently giving the Beiersdorf Rolling Daily market at €42.92 - €43.04. Therefore, you could spread bet on the Beiersdorf shares:
- Going higher than €43.04, or
- Going lower than €42.92
When spread betting on German equities you trade in £x per cent. So, if your stake was £4 per cent and the Beiersdorf shares move €0.05 then there would be a difference to your P&L of £20. £4 per cent x €0.05 = £20.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no set closing date for this market. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next day.
If a trade is rolled over and you are spread betting on the market to:
- Increase - then you normally pay a small overnight financing fee, or
- Decrease - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

Beiersdorf Rolling Daily - German Shares Spread Trading Example
Now, if you consider the spread of €42.92 - €43.04 and make the assumptions:
- you have done your analysis, and
- it leads you to think that the Beiersdorf shares will go higher than €43.04
then you may decide that you are going to buy at €43.04 for a stake of, let’s say, £2 per cent.
With such a spread bet you make a profit of £2 for every cent that the Beiersdorf shares increase and move above €43.04. Conversely, however, you will lose £2 for every cent that the Beiersdorf market falls below €43.04.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
As a result, if after a few trading sessions the shares started to increase then you might think about closing your spread bet to secure your profit.
So if the market rose then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to €43.60 - €43.72. In order to close your trade you would sell at €43.60. So, with the same £2 stake your profit would come to:
P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (€43.60 - €43.04) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.56 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = 56c x £2 per cent stake
P&L = £112 profit
Trading shares, whether by spread betting or not, doesn't always work out as you would have liked. In this example, you had bet that the share price would increase. However, it could fall.
If the Beiersdorf stock had fallen then you might choose to close your spread bet to limit your losses.
Should the market drop to €42.39 - €42.51 you would close your trade by selling at €42.39. If so, your loss would be calculated as:
P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (€42.39 - €43.04) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.65 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -65c x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -£130 loss
