How to Spread Bet on AXA? |
Should you want to invest in European listed companies such as AXA then one possibility could be spread betting on the AXA share price.
Looking at a spread trading site like Inter Trader, you can see they have priced the AXA Rolling Daily market at €13.36 - €13.40. As a result, you could spread bet on the AXA share price:
Increasing above €13.40, or
Decreasing below €13.36
When financial spread betting on French equities you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you invested £4 per cent and the AXA share price changes by €0.37 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £148. £4 per cent x €0.37 = £148.
You can also trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no preset closing date for this market. You do not have to close your position, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it will just roll over into the next trading session.
If you do let your bet roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
Move up - then you'll often be charged a small financing fee, or
Move down - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

AXA Rolling Daily - French Equities Trading Example |
Now, if we continue with the spread of €13.36 - €13.40 and make the assumptions that:
- You've analysed the company, and
- You think that the AXA share price will increase and go above €13.40
Then you might decide to buy a spread bet at €13.40 for a stake of £10 per cent.
With such a bet you make a profit of £10 for every cent that the AXA shares move higher than €13.40. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will lose £10 for every cent that the AXA market decreases lower than €13.40.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
If after a few days the share price moved higher then you could consider closing your trade in order to guarantee your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread might change to €13.53 - €13.57. In order to close your trade you would sell at €13.53. Accordingly, with the same £10 stake your profit would be:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Level - Opening Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€13.53 - €13.40) x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = €0.13 x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = 13c x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = £130 profit
Speculating on equities, whether by spread betting or not, is not always easy. In this example, you wanted the share price to rise. Naturally, the share price might go down.
If the AXA shares weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your position to stop any further losses.
If the market dropped to €13.26 - €13.30 then you would settle your spread bet by selling at €13.26. This would result in a loss of:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Level - Opening Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€13.26 - €13.40) x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -€0.14 x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -14c x £10 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -£140 loss
Note - AXA Rolling Daily spread betting market taken as of 23-Jan-13.
