How to Spread Bet on Shares - Autonomy Corporation Rolling Daily

If an investor decides to invest in firms like Autonomy Corporation then one possibility could be spread betting on the Autonomy Corporation share price.

If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads trading site, they are giving the Autonomy Corporation Rolling Daily market at 1973.0p - 1977.0p. As a result, an investor can spread trade on the Autonomy Corporation share price:
  • Rising above 1977.0p, or
  • Falling below 1973.0p
When financial spread trading on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. As a result, if you decide to invest £2 per penny and the Autonomy Corporation shares move 5p then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £10. £2 per penny x 5p = £10.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

You should note that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market', therefore there is no set settlement date for this market. Therefore, if you decide not to close your trade by the end of the day, it just rolls over to the next day.

If you do let your position roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
  • Increase - then you normally pay a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Decrease - then a small payment is normally credited to your account
If you would like a fully worked example then see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Autonomy Corporation Rolling Daily Shares Trading Example

If you think about the above spread of 1973.0p - 1977.0p and make the assumptions:
  • you have analysed the markets, and
  • you think that the Autonomy Corporation shares are likely to increase and move above 1977.0p
then you could choose to go long of the market at 1977.0p for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £1 per penny.

So, you win £1 for every penny that the Autonomy Corporation shares rise higher than 1977.0p. Having said that, you will make a loss of £1 for every penny that the Autonomy Corporation market moves below 1977.0p.

Looked at another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

Therefore, if after a few hours the share price started to rise you might decide to close your trade to lock in your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 2066.0p - 2070.0p. To close your position you would sell at 2066.0p. So, with the same £1 stake your profit would be:

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (2066.0p - 1977.0p) x £1 per penny stake
Profit / loss = 89.0p x £1 per penny stake
Profit / loss = £89.00 profit

Trading shares, by spread betting or otherwise, is not always simple. In this case, you had bet that the share price would rise. However, the share price could fall.

If the Autonomy Corporation stock began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your position to limit your losses.

Should the market fall back to 1897.9p - 1901.9p you would close your spread bet by selling at 1897.9p. That would mean you would make a loss of:

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (1897.9p - 1977.0p) x £1 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -79.1p x £1 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -£79.10 loss
