How to Spread Bet on Forex - Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar Rolling Daily
As with a lot of financial markets, it is possible to spread bet on foreign exchange rates, like Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar, to rise or fall.
If you were to look at the FinancialSpreads website, they are valuing the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar Rolling Daily market at S$1.30994 - S$1.31114. As a result, you can spread trade on the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar FX rate:
- Increasing higher than S$1.31114, or
- Decreasing lower than S$1.30994
When spread trading on Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar you trade in £x per point where a point is S$0.00010 of the pairs movement. As a result, if you chose to invest £2 per point and Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar moves S$0.00050 then that would be a difference to your P&L of £10. £2 per point x S$0.00050 = £2 per point x 5.0 points = £10.
Rolling Daily FX Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so it does not have a closing date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over to the next day.
If you do roll over a bet and you are spread betting that the market will:
- Move up - then you are normally charged a small financing fee, or
- Move down - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar Rolling Daily Trading Example
Now, if we consider the spread of S$1.30994 - S$1.31114 and make the assumptions:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to feel that the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar rate will increase and go above S$1.31114
then you could decide that you are going to buy at S$1.31114 and risk, for the sake of argument, £1 per point.
This means that you win £1 for every point (S$0.00010) that the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar forex pair moves higher than S$1.31114. Conversely, however, you will make a loss of £1 for every point that the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar market moves lower than S$1.31114.
Looking at this from another angle, if you buy a spread bet then your P&L is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few hours the FX pair moved higher then you might want to close your spread bet so that you can guarantee your profit.
Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread could change to S$1.32261 - S$1.32381. To close your position you would sell at S$1.32261. As a result, with the same £1 stake you would make a profit of:
Profit / loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = (S$1.32261 - S$1.31114) x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = S$0.01147 x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = 114.7 points x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = £114.70 profit
Speculating on forex, whether by spread betting or not, is not always easy. In this example, you wanted the forex rate to go up. Nevertheless, the currency rate can also fall.
If the Australian Dollar - Singapore Dollar market weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your position in order to limit your losses.
Should the spread pull back to S$1.30098 - S$1.30218 then you would settle/close your trade by selling at S$1.30098. If so, that would mean you would lose:
Profit / loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = (S$1.30098 - S$1.31114) x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = S$0.01016 x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = -101.6 points x £1 per point stake
Profit / loss = -£101.60 loss
