How to Spread Bet on Aryzta

How to Spread Bet on Aryzta?

If you want to speculate on firms like Aryzta then one possibility could be spread trading on the Aryzta share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting platform like Tradefair, you can see they are currently showing the Aryzta Rolling Daily market at €38.89 - €39.38. As a result, an investor could put a spread bet on the Aryzta share price:

Aryzta Spread Trading Example Rising above €39.38, or
Aryzta Spread Betting Example Falling below €38.89

When placing a spread bet on Irish equities you trade in £x per cent. So, if you decide to invest £3 per cent and the Aryzta shares move €0.29 then there would be a difference to your P&L of £87. £3 per cent x €0.29 = £87.

You can also spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

It's important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a normal futures market, there is no closing date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next day.

If you do let your bet roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

Aryzta Spread Betting Example Rise - then you will pay a small overnight financing fee, or
Aryzta Spread Betting Example Fall - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

You can find more on Rolling Daily Markets, as well as a fully worked example, in our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

If we take the above spread of €38.89 - €39.38 and assume that:
  • You have done your market research, and
  • You think the Aryzta shares look like they will push above €39.38
Then you may decide that you want to buy at €39.38 for a stake of, let’s say, £2 per cent.

So, you gain £2 for every cent that the Aryzta shares go higher than €39.38. Of course, it also means that you will lose £2 for every cent that the Aryzta market decreases below €39.38.

Looking at this from another angle, should you buy a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

With this in mind, if after a few days the share price started to move upwards then you could choose to close your position in order to guarantee your profit. If that happened then the spread, set by the spread trading company, might change to €40.17 - €40.66. You would settle your position by selling at €40.17. As a result, with the same £2 stake you would make:

P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (€40.17 - €39.38) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = €0.79 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = 79c x £2 per cent stake
P&L = £158 profit

Trading shares, by spread betting or otherwise, is not easy. In this case, you had bet that the share price would go up. However, the share price might go down.

If the Aryzta stock weakened, against your expectations, then you could close your position to limit your losses.

Should the market fall back to €38.67 - €39.16 you would close your spread bet by selling at €38.67. As a result, your loss would be:

P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
P&L = (€38.67 - €39.38) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.71 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -71c x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -£142 loss

Note: Aryzta Rolling Daily market accurate as of 18-Dec-12.
