Should an investor want to invest in firms such as Allied Irish Banks then one option is to spread bet on the Allied Irish Banks share price.
If an investor was to look at the Tradefair website, they are currently pricing the Allied Irish Banks Rolling Daily market at €0.50 - €0.53. Therefore, an investor can spread bet on the Allied Irish Banks share price:
- Rising higher than €0.53, or
- Falling lower than €0.50
Whilst financial spread betting on Irish equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if your stake was £20 per cent and the Allied Irish Banks shares move €0.05 then that would be a difference to your P&L of £100. £20 per cent x €0.05 = £100.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

- Move up - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

Allied Irish Banks Rolling Daily - Irish Shares Spread Betting Example
So, if you consider the above spread of €0.50 - €0.53 and assume that:
- you have analysed the markets, and
- you feel that the Allied Irish Banks shares are likely to push above €0.53
then you may decide that you want to buy at €0.53 and invest, for the sake of argument, £20 per cent.
With such a spread bet you make a profit of £20 for every cent that the Allied Irish Banks shares increase and move higher than €0.53. Having said that, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £20 for every cent that the Allied Irish Banks market falls below €0.53.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
If after a few trading sessions the stock started to move upwards then you could choose to close your position and therefore lock in your profits.
So if the market rose then the spread might move to €0.59 - €0.62. To close your trade you would sell at €0.59. As a result, with the same £20 stake your profit would come to:
Your P&L = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your P&L = (€0.59 - €0.53) x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = €0.06 x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = 6c x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = £120 profit
Speculating on shares, whether by spread betting or not, may not go to plan. In the above example, you wanted the share price to rise. Naturally, the share price might go down.
If the Allied Irish Banks share price had fallen then you could close your position to stop any further losses.
Should the market fall back to €0.48 - €0.51 then you would settle/close your trade by selling at €0.48. Accordingly, your loss would be:
Your P&L = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your P&L = (€0.48 - €0.53) x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = -€0.05 x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = -5c x £20 per cent stake
Your P&L = -£100 loss
