How to Spread Bet on Dutch Shares - Ahold Rolling Daily
If you are looking to invest in firms such as Ahold then one option is to spread trade on the Ahold share price.
If an investor was to look at the Tradefair site, they are valuing the Ahold Rolling Daily market at €9.29 - €9.32. Therefore, an investor could spread trade on the Ahold share price:
- Moving above €9.32, or
- Moving below €9.29
Whilst spread trading on Dutch shares you trade in £x per cent. As a result, should you decide to risk £6 per cent and the Ahold share price moves €0.05 then there would be a difference to your P&L of £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.
Note that you are also able to invest in this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no closing date. If you decide to leave your trade open at the end of the day, it will just roll over into the next day.
Should your spread bet roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:
- Increase - then you will normally be charged a small financing fee, or
- Decrease - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account

Ahold Rolling Daily - Dutch Equities Spread Betting Example
So, if you think about the spread of €9.29 - €9.32 and assume:
- you have done your research, and
- you think that the Ahold shares will rise higher than €9.32
then you might decide that you are going to go long of the market at €9.32 for a stake of, for example, £3 per cent.
With such a bet you win £3 for every cent that the Ahold shares increase and go above €9.32. Of course, you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Ahold market decreases below €9.32.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
As a result, if after a few sessions the share price rose then you might want to close your position and therefore guarantee your profits.
Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread might change to €9.65 - €9.68. In order to close your spread bet you would sell at €9.65. So, with the same £3 stake you would calculate your profit as:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (€9.65 - €9.32) x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = €0.33 x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = 33c x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = £99 profit
Trading equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not always simple. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Naturally, the share price can also decrease.
If the Ahold stock had fallen then you might choose to close your trade in order to limit your losses.
If the spread dropped to €9.04 - €9.07 you would settle your spread bet by selling at €9.04. So your loss would be calculated as:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (€9.04 - €9.32) x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -€0.28 x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -28c x £3 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -£84 loss

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for Ahold?
