How to Spread Bet on Accenture?

If you are going to invest in firms like Accenture then one possibility could be to spread bet on the Accenture share price.

Looking at a spread betting site like FinancialSpreads.com, you can see that they are currently valuing the Accenture Rolling Daily market at $72.61 - $72.72. This means that you can put a spread bet on the Accenture shares:

Accenture Spread Trading Example Increasing higher than $72.72, or
Accenture Spread Betting Example Decreasing lower than $72.61

Whilst spread betting on US shares you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, should you decide to invest £5 per cent and the Accenture share price changes by $0.20 then that would alter your bottom line by £100. £5 per cent x $0.20 = £100.

You can also invest in this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

This is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no set settlement date for this market. You do not have to close your position, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over into the next day.

If a bet is rolled over and you are spread betting on the market to:

Accenture Spread Betting Example Move up - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
Accenture Spread Betting Example Move down - then a small payment is often credited to your account

For a more detailed guide to Rolling Daily Markets, including a fully worked example, please read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Accenture Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Betting Example

Now, if you consider the above spread of $72.61 - $72.72 and make the assumptions:
  • You have done your analysis of the markets, and
  • You feel that the Accenture shares will rise above $72.72
Then you may decide that you want to buy at $72.72 for a stake of £2 per cent.

With such a bet you win £2 for every cent that the Accenture shares increase and go higher than $72.72. Having said that, it also means that you will make a loss of £2 for every cent that the Accenture market decreases below $72.72.

Considering this from another angle, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

With this in mind, if after a few sessions the shares rose then you might consider closing your position to lock in your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread could change to $73.27 - $73.38. In order to close your position you would sell at $73.27. Therefore, with the same £2 stake your profit would come to:

P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($73.27 - $72.72) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = $0.55 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = 55¢ x £2 per cent stake
P&L = £110 profit

Trading shares, whether by spread trading or otherwise, can go against you. In this case, you had bet that the share price would rise. However, it can also fall.

If the Accenture stock began to fall then you could close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.

If the spread dropped to $72.25 - $72.36 then this means you would close your position by selling at $72.25. As a result, your loss would be:

P&L = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = ($72.25 - $72.72) x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -$0.47 x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -47¢ x £2 per cent stake
P&L = -£94 loss

Note - Accenture Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 06-Feb-13.
