How to Spread Bet on 3i

How to Spread Bet on 3i?

If you are going to invest in UK companies like 3i Infrastructure then one solution could be to spread trade on the 3i Infrastructure share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting site like InterTrader, you can see they are valuing the 3i Infrastructure Rolling Daily market at 125.5p - 126.0p. As a result, an investor can spread bet on the 3i Infrastructure share price:

3i Infrastructure Spread Betting Example Going higher than 126.0p, or
3i Infrastructure Trading Example Going lower than 125.5p

When financial spread trading on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you chose to risk £2 per penny and the 3i Infrastructure shares move 40p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £80. £2 per penny x 40p = £80.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next session.

If your spread bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:

3i Infrastructure Trading Example Move higher - then you would normally pay a small financing fee, or
3i Infrastructure Trading Example Move lower - then a small payment is often credited to your account

For a more detailed breakdown of Rolling Daily Markets please read our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

3i Infrastructure Rolling Daily - Shares Trading Example

Now, if you consider the above spread of 125.5p - 126.0p and assume that:
  • You have completed your analysis of the company, and
  • You think the 3i Infrastructure share price is likely to increase and go higher than 126.0p
Then you could decide that you are going to buy at 126.0p and invest £20 per penny.

Therefore, you win £20 for every penny that the 3i Infrastructure shares increase and move above 126.0p. Conversely, however, you will make a loss of £20 for every penny that the 3i Infrastructure market goes below 126.0p.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

Therefore, if after a few days the stock started to rise you might decide to close your trade to secure your profit. So if the market rose then the spread could change to 130.7p - 131.2p. You would close your spread bet by selling at 130.7p. Accordingly, with the same £20 stake this trade would make you a profit of:

Profit / loss = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (130.7p - 126.0p) x £20 per penny stake
Profit / loss = 4.7p x £20 per penny stake
Profit / loss = £94.00 profit

Speculating on equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not always simple. In this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Of course, it might decrease.

If the 3i Infrastructure shares decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you could choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.

Should the spread pull back to 120.6p - 121.1p you would close your spread bet by selling at 120.6p. So your loss would be calculated as:

Profit / loss = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (120.6p - 126.0p) x £20 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -5.4p x £20 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -£108.00 loss
