Technical Analysis - 16 September 2011

Indices Technical Analysis

Dow Jones Index Technical Analysis   Dow Jones Index Technical Analysis

DJI closed higher on Thursday as it extends the rebound off Monday's low. This morning's consumer price index came in at 0.4% for August, which was higher than expected. First time claims for unemployment benefits rose by 11,000 to 428,000 in the week ending September 10. Today's high-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-higher opening on Friday.

S&P 500 Index Technical Analysis   S&P 500 Index Technical Analysis

SPI closed higher on Thursday as it extends the short covering rally off August's uptrend line. The high-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-higher opening when Friday's night session begins trading. Stochastics and the RSI are turning neutral-to-bullish signalling that sideways-to-higher prices are possible near-term.

Nasdaq Index Technical Analysis   Nasdaq Index Technical Analysis

NDI closed higher on Thursday and the high-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-higher opening when Friday's night session begins trading. Stochastics and the RSI are diverging but have turned bullish again signalling that sideways-to-higher prices are possible near-term.

Forex Technical Analysis

EUR/USD Technical Analysis   Euro / Dollar Technical Analysis

EUR/USD closed higher due to short covering on Thursday as it consolidated some of the decline off August's low. The high-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-higher opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are turning bullish signaling that sideways-to-higher prices are possible near-term. Closes above the 20-day moving average crossing would confirm that a short-term low has been posted. If it renews the aforementioned decline, the 62% retracement level of the 2010-2011-rally crossing is the next downside target.

USD/JPY Technical Analysis   Dollar / Yen Technical Analysis

USD/JPY closed slightly lower on Thursday and the low-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-lower opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are bearish signalling that sideways-to-lower prices are possible near-term. Closes below August's low crossing are needed to renew this year's decline. If it renews the rally off August's low, the 25% retracement level of the April-August decline crossing is the next upside target.

GBP/USD Technical Analysis   Sterling / Dollar Technical Analysis

GBP/USD closed higher due to short covering on Thursday as it rebounds off the 50% retracement level of the 2010-2011-rally crossing. The mid-range close sets the stage for a steady opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are oversold but remain neutral-to-bearish signalling that sideways-to-lower prices are possible near-term. If it extends the aforementioned decline, the 62% retracement level of the 2010-2011-rally crossing is the next downside target. Closes above the 20-day moving average crossing would confirm that a short-term low has been posted.

USD/CHF Technical Analysis   Dollar / Swiss Franc Technical Analysis

USD/CHF closed lower on Thursday as it consolidates some of the rally off August's low. The low-range close sets the stage for a steady-to-lower opening on Friday. Stochastics and the RSI are turning neutral-to-bearish hinting that a short-term high might be in or is near. Closes below the 20-day moving average crossing are needed to confirm that a short-term high has been posted. If it extends the rally off August's low, the 62% retracement level of the 2010-2011-decline crossing is the next upside target.
